Van Melle started around 1840 as a bakery in Breskens. He also sold sugar balls. In 1900, son Izaak van Melle also started to produce them mechanically.
Around 1920, Isaac's brother Dirk-Machiel started a factory for biscuits and waffles, including the Maria Biscuit.

Recipes were sought internationally and from 1926 onwards fudge was produced, as well as the fruit caramel and peppermint caramel that were introduced from Poland.
These sweets are still popular worldwide under the name Mentos.

Mentos is available in many flavours, of which mint and mixed fruits are the most sold.
The mixed fruit variety contains a mix of orange, strawberry and lemon flavour.
Originally, Mentos had a licorice flavour, which is still sold in the Netherlands.
