Fortuin was founded in 1842 by Willem Hendrik Fortuin in the Frisian town of Lemmer.
Not much later, the confectionery moved to the city of Dokkum, where the company is still located today.

Over the years, the Frisian company developed into a luxury confectionery and in 1888 the step was taken to an industrial confectionery factory.
Many classics follow, including the well-known fruit hearts, ice cream bonbons, salmiak pastilles and the showpiece Wilhelmina peppermint.
