ERU was founded in 1824 by namesake Egbert Ruijs (E RU), a cheese lover pur sang.

Around the 1920s, methods of melting cheese were sought.
After successful experiments with melting cheeses, the first factory was opened in 1938, where the large-scale production of processed cheese became possible.

Later, the success of the melted cheese became so great that ERU started to focus mainly on cheese spreads.
In 1959, Goudkuipje was introduced, which quickly became ERU's success. Cheese spread packed in a tub that is unique at the time.
There are now many varieties: Prestige, Sambal, Balance and more.
