Hans Riegel was born in 1893 in the town of Friesdorf near the German city of Bonn.
He learns to be a candy maker and becomes co-owner of the company Heinen &Riegel.

On December 13, 1920, he founded HARIBO (HAns RIegel BOnn) and began to produce his confectionery in a laundry kitchen in the back yard with no more than a bag of sugar, a marble slab, a stool, a stove, a copper kettle and a roller.
